Galations 2:20-21

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly." Galations 2:20-21

The Natural Way

In preparation for breastfeeding I've started to read Breastfeeding Made Simple by Nancy Mohrbacher and Kathleen Kendall-tackett. After reading just the forward of the book I had a funny thought. Why is it that we have to learn how to do things that are supposed to come natural to us? My husband and I are taking a natural childbirth class, I'm reading a book about the seven natural laws for nursing mothers, we learn how to garden organically and cook unprocessed and healthy meals, how to clean with safer/homemade products. The list goes on. All of this would be unheard of to a person who was living 200 years ago. Even though I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this book I am also a little embarrassed that I even have to. I didn't grow up around women who nursed (not that I blame them for my ignorance). Could it be that our "advanced" western culture is stealing the beauty of how God made our bodies and the world to work without all of this human intervention?

Well, even 200 or 2000 years ago women had other women to go to who had been through similar experiences for help and advice. No one probably used the term "lactation consultant", but I'm sure there were veteran mothers who coached new moms through breastfeeding problems. We all learn by example, you know? It's just that there's, like, 2000 years of examples for us today so it makes sense that there are a lot of resources to go to for information.

With that being said, I totally agree with you. I gave up trying to research everything about my pregnancy or what to feed my child for his first foods because it was just interfering way too much with what came natural to us. If I am ever in need of help or I'm just curious I know where to go to find the information, and I do that a lot, but I don't feel like I need to know everything there is to know about a topic to experience the real thing.
